You can get a remote job without experience, but you will most likely start in support, admin, data or back-office work. Those roles hire for reliability, typing speed and clear writing rather than a long résumé. Customer service representatives earned a median of $21.53 an hour in May 2025, and IT help desk staff earned $29.74, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage release of May 15, 2026.
This guide covers 25 entry-level remote job types with real US pay data. For each one, you will see what the work looks like on a normal day and what gets a beginner hired. After that come the job boards worth your time, the scam signs the FTC warns about, and a 30-day plan to land the first offer.
Customer Service and Data Entry Open First, Pay From $17 to $34
- The easiest doors to open are customer service, data entry, admin support and order processing. They train on the job and care most about accuracy and response time.
- Pay for the 25 roles below runs from a $17.04 median for telemarketers to $33.65 for inside sales of services, based on BLS data for May 2025. The median for all US jobs was $24.51.
- A short course can move you up a pay band. Google’s IT Support certificate needs no experience, takes three to six months and costs $49 a month on Coursera in the US.
- Real employers never ask you to pay to get a job or to get paid. The FTC calls that a sure sign of a scam, and job scam losses topped $220 million in just the first half of 2024.
- Apply to 10 to 15 well-matched roles a week with a one-page résumé built around transferable skills, and set up a quiet, tested home workspace before the first interview.

BLS Median Pay for 25 Beginner-Friendly Remote Roles
The figures below are national medians from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey for May 2025. A median means half of all workers in that job earn more and half earn less. These numbers include people with years in the role, so a true beginner should expect to start a little below the median. The full-time figure is our own math: the hourly median times 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.
BLS reports pay for each occupation as a whole, not for remote jobs alone. Your offer will also depend on the employer, the state and the shift.

AI training work pays by a different model. Workers are paid per hour of task work on a platform instead of drawing a salary, so it sits in its own section below.
Customer-Facing Remote Jobs for Beginners
Talking to customers is the largest single entry point into remote work. BLS counted about 2.6 million customer service representatives in May 2025, more than any other job in this guide. Companies hire in batches, train in groups and promote people who show up on time and stay calm.
Customer Service Representative
You answer calls, chats or emails about orders, bills, accounts and complaints. A typical shift means logging into a phone system and a ticket tool, then working through a queue while a dashboard tracks your handle time and customer ratings. Most employers want a high school diploma, a quiet room, a wired internet connection and decent typing speed. Retail, food service or call center work counts as relevant experience, so list it. Median pay was $21.53 an hour.
Live Chat and Email Support Agent
Chat agents do the same job as phone reps, only in writing, and often handle two or three chats at once. This suits people who write clearly and type fast but dislike phone calls. Software companies and online stores post these roles under titles such as “support specialist” or “customer experience associate.” They fall under the same BLS occupation as phone reps, so pay sits in the same range.
Appointment Setter
Appointment setters call or message leads to book sales meetings, consults or service visits. The job is mostly outbound calls from a script, logging each result in a CRM and passing booked slots to a salesperson. BLS groups this work with telemarketers, who had a median of $17.04 an hour, the lowest in this guide. Many setter jobs add a commission per booked meeting, so ask how much of the pay is base and how much is bonus before you accept.
Inside Sales Representative
Inside sales reps sell services by phone and video, often moving up from appointment setting after six to twelve months. You run demos, follow up on quotes and manage a pipeline of deals. The BLS median for sales representatives of services was $33.65 an hour, the highest on our list, but a large part of that pay can depend on commission. Entry roles usually carry the title “sales development representative” and focus on booking meetings before closing them.
Reservation Agent
Hotels, airlines, car rental firms and cruise lines hire remote agents to book trips, change bookings and handle loyalty questions. You spend the day in a booking system and on calls, and the work peaks around holidays and bad weather. The BLS median for reservation and travel clerks was $21.34 an hour.
Remote Admin and Data Jobs You Can Start From Scratch
Admin and data jobs reward accuracy more than charm. If you like checklists, spreadsheets and quiet focus, start here.
Data Entry Clerk
Data entry clerks type or paste information from forms, invoices, scans or audio into a database or spreadsheet. A good clerk checks their own work, catches mismatched numbers and flags missing fields. Employers often test typing speed and accuracy, so practise until you can hold a steady pace without errors. Median pay was $19.88 an hour. Be careful here: “data entry” is also the most common bait title in job scams, which we cover below.
Virtual Administrative Assistant
Virtual assistants manage inboxes, calendars, travel, documents and simple bookkeeping for one person or a small team. A day might include sorting 80 emails, booking a client lunch, updating a slide deck and chasing an unpaid invoice. BLS groups this work with secretaries and administrative assistants, whose median was $22.86 an hour. Many VAs start as freelancers. If you go that route, our freelance hourly rate calculator shows what you need to charge to cover taxes and unpaid hours.
General Transcriptionist
Transcriptionists turn audio and video into text for podcasts, court records, market research and captions. Much of the first draft now comes from speech recognition, so the job is often editing that draft against the recording. You need good listening skills, solid grammar and a fast, accurate keyboard. The closest BLS occupation, word processors and typists, had a median of $23.69 an hour. Beginner platforms usually pay per audio minute, which works out lower until you build speed.
Ecommerce Order Processor
Order processors check online orders, fix address problems, issue simple refunds, update stock records and answer “where is my order” questions. Small brands often combine this with customer email. BLS classes the work as order clerks, with a median of $22.20 an hour. If you have ever run a side store or sold on Etsy or Amazon, put that on your résumé, because it shows you already know the workflow.
Freight or Field Service Dispatcher
Dispatchers assign drivers, technicians or loads, track progress on a map and fix problems when a truck is late or a job runs long. Trucking brokers and home service companies hire remote dispatchers who can juggle phone calls and a scheduling screen at the same time. The BLS median for dispatchers outside emergency services was $24.20 an hour. Expect some evening or weekend shifts.
HR or Recruiting Assistant
Recruiting assistants post job ads, screen applications, schedule interviews and send offer letters and onboarding forms. The work is mostly email, calendars and an applicant tracking system. Human resources assistants had a median of $24.33 an hour. Companies that grow fast or hire seasonal staff use the most help, and the job is a common first step toward a recruiter or HR generalist role.
Entry-Level Remote Finance and Healthcare Back-Office Roles
Money and health records generate a steady stream of paperwork that someone has to check, code and file. These jobs often need a short course, but they pay a little more and tend to last.
Bookkeeping Clerk
Bookkeeping clerks record sales and expenses, match bank feeds to receipts, and prepare reports for an accountant. Accounting software does much of the math, so the job is about clean categories and catching errors. The BLS median was $24.36 an hour. Comfort with spreadsheets helps, and a free small business expense spreadsheet is a good way to practise categorising real transactions.
Billing Clerk
Billing clerks create invoices, post payments and follow up on overdue accounts. In healthcare the role often includes checking insurance details before a claim goes out. Billing and posting clerks had a median of $23.32 an hour. Accuracy matters more than speed, because one wrong code or amount can delay payment by weeks.
Payroll Clerk
Payroll clerks collect hours, check overtime and deductions, run payroll in software and answer staff questions about pay stubs. It is detail-heavy and deadline-driven, which may explain why its median of $28.01 an hour is one of the higher figures here. Many payroll clerks start as general admin staff and pick up payroll duties over time.
Insurance Claims Processor
Claims processors review new claims, check them against policy rules, request missing documents and route each file for approval. Insurers train in groups and measure output closely. Insurance claims and policy processing clerks had a median of $23.67 an hour. Some states require a license for adjusters who decide claims, but processor roles that only prepare files usually do not.
Loan Processing Assistant
Loan assistants collect pay stubs, bank statements and IDs from borrowers, check that files are complete and keep each loan moving toward closing. Mortgage lenders and credit unions hire remote staff for this work. Loan interviewers and clerks had a median of $24.05 an hour. Hiring rises and falls with interest rates and home sales.
Seasonal Tax Preparer
Tax preparers enter client information into tax software, ask the right questions and prepare returns for review. Tax firms add extra preparers for the January to April filing season. To prepare returns for pay you need an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). The BLS median was $26.40 an hour, though seasonal pay is usually lower in the first year.
Remote Patient Scheduler
Schedulers book appointments, confirm insurance, send reminders and handle cancellations for clinics and hospital groups. You work in an electronic health record system and on the phone with patients. BLS groups the role with medical secretaries and administrative assistants, whose median was $22.08 an hour. Privacy rules apply, so expect HIPAA training in the first week.
Medical Records and Coding Specialist
Medical coders turn doctors’ notes into standard billing codes so insurers can pay claims. The work is focused, solitary and well suited to home offices. Medical records specialists had a median of $24.59 an hour. Most coding jobs ask for a credential, such as those from AAPC or AHIMA, even for beginners. Plan on a course before you apply rather than applying cold.
Medical Transcription Editor
Medical transcriptionists once typed doctors’ dictation by hand. Today most of the work is editing text produced by speech recognition and fixing drug names, doses and medical terms. Median pay was $19.43 an hour. A medical terminology course helps a lot, and the editing skill carries over to coding or records roles later.
Benefits Eligibility Interviewer
Eligibility interviewers work for state and county agencies, deciding whether applicants qualify for programs such as food aid, Medicaid or unemployment. You interview people by phone, check documents and enter decisions into a case system. The BLS median was $26.06 an hour. Government jobs come with civil service tests and longer hiring times, but they also bring steady hours and benefits.
Tech, Teaching and Language Work From Home
These jobs ask for a specific skill, such as basic IT, a school subject or a second language. You can still start them without paid experience if you can prove the skill.
IT Help Desk Technician
Help desk staff reset passwords, fix email and printer problems, set up laptops and log each ticket. Most remote help desk roles start at “Tier 1,” which means following a fix list and passing harder cases up the chain. Computer user support specialists had a median of $29.74 an hour, the best pay for a role that takes no degree. A certificate like Google IT Support or CompTIA A+ is the usual way in.
Online Tutor
Tutors help students with homework, test prep or a single subject over video. Some companies hire college students and recent grads, and a strong record in a subject can matter more than teaching experience. The BLS median for tutors was $20.84 an hour.
Interpreter or Translator
If you speak two languages well, remote interpreting by phone or video is open to you. Hospitals, courts, insurers and customer service centers all buy these services. Interpreters and translators had a median of $28.93 an hour. Expect a language test before you are hired, and medical or court work usually needs a separate certification.
Proofreader
Proofreaders check text for spelling, grammar, style and layout errors before it is published. Publishers, law firms, marketing agencies and transcription companies all hire them. The BLS median was $24.58 an hour, but this is a small occupation with fewer than 5,000 jobs counted. Most beginners start freelance, testing on platforms and taking small jobs to build samples.
Travel Agent
Travel agents plan and book trips, often for a niche such as cruises, destination weddings or group tours. Many home-based agents work under a host agency that supplies booking tools and supplier deals. Travel agents had a median of $24.11 an hour. Income often depends on commission, so ask how a host agency splits it before you join.
AI Training and Data Annotation
AI companies pay people to write, rate and correct chatbot answers so the models improve. A typical task asks you to compare two answers, explain which is better and why, or fix a wrong one. On DataAnnotation, general work starts at $25 to $50 an hour and coding or STEM work starts at $40 or more, according to its FAQ page. You take a starter test once, which takes about an hour, and you are paid through PayPal. The site says there are no minimum hours, so treat this work as flexible extra income rather than a steady salary.

Fast Certifications and Skills That Get Beginners Hired
A short course gives a hiring manager proof that you can do the job. Pick one course that matches the role you want, finish it and put it at the top of your résumé.
**Google IT Support Professional Certificate.** This program is built for complete beginners. Google says it needs no experience or degree, takes most learners three to six months and costs $49 a month on Coursera in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial. It covers troubleshooting, networking, operating systems and security, and it maps directly to Tier 1 help desk roles.
**Other Google Career Certificates.** The same Grow with Google program offers certificates in data analytics, project management, digital marketing and e-commerce, UX design and cybersecurity. Data analytics and project management suit people aiming for admin or operations roles that grow into higher pay.
**Medical coding and terminology.** Coding jobs almost always ask for a credential from AAPC or AHIMA. A medical terminology class is a cheaper first step that also helps with scheduling, billing and transcription roles.
**Typing speed and accuracy.** Data entry, transcription and chat jobs often test both. Practise daily on a free typing test, and keep accuracy high. Speed without accuracy will not pass a screening test.
**Software you can name.** Job ads list tools such as Zendesk, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace. Free trials and vendor tutorials let you learn the basics before an interview, and you can honestly list what you practised.
For more courses that raise pay without a degree, see our guide to the highest paying certifications without a degree. If you would rather earn while you learn, registered apprenticeships in IT and healthcare admin pay a wage from the first day.
Where to Find Entry-Level Remote Job Openings
General job sites have the most listings, while remote-only boards are easier to search. Use one or two of each and set daily email alerts with phrases such as “remote customer support,” “entry level” and “no experience required.”
FlexJobs
FlexJobs screens listings before it publishes them and charges a membership fee for full access. That screening filters out much of the junk that floods free boards. It works best if you are short on time and want fewer, cleaner leads. Its category pages for customer service, data entry and administrative work are a good place to start.
We Work Remotely

We Work Remotely only lists remote jobs, sorted by category, and it is free for job seekers. Its customer support and sales categories carry the most beginner-friendly posts. Many listings come from software startups that hire worldwide, so check the time zone and country rules before you apply.
Remote.co
Remote.co organises remote jobs by category and adds guides on working from home. Its customer service, admin and data entry sections are free to browse. It is a handy second source to compare against FlexJobs.
Remotive

Remotive focuses on remote jobs at tech companies. Customer support, sales and operations make up much of its non-developer listings. Tech companies often promote support staff into account management, QA or product roles, so this is a good place to look for growth.
Indeed
Indeed has the largest pool of listings, including call centers, insurers and healthcare groups that rarely post on remote-only boards. Type “remote” in the location field and filter by “entry level.” Volume brings risk, so check every employer against its own careers page before you send personal details.
LinkedIn Jobs
LinkedIn lets you filter by “Remote” and by “Entry level” experience. Its real advantage is people. You can see who works at a company, message a recruiter after you apply and ask former colleagues for referrals. A complete profile with a clear headline, such as “Customer support | Bilingual English and Spanish,” helps recruiters find you.
USAJOBS

USAJOBS is the official site for US federal jobs, and you can filter for remote positions. Entry roles include contact center, claims and administrative jobs. Federal hiring is slow and the application format is strict, so follow each announcement’s résumé rules exactly. State and county job sites are worth checking too for eligibility interviewer and call center roles.
Wellfound

Wellfound, formerly AngelList Talent, lists startup jobs and often shows salary and equity ranges up front. Look for customer success, operations and sales development roles. Startups move fast and care about initiative, which can help a beginner who presents a strong cover note.
How to Spot a Remote Job Scam Before It Costs You
Job scams target exactly the people this guide is for. The FTC reported that consumers lost more than $220 million to job scams in the first six months of 2024 alone, according to a December 2024 FTC release. “Task scams,” which pay small sums for rating or liking items online and then demand a deposit, went from zero reports in 2020 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024. Cryptocurrency was the preferred payment method.
The FTC’s April 2026 alert lists the warning signs. Walk away if you see any of these:
- An unexpected text, WhatsApp or Telegram message about a job. The FTC says real employers never recruit that way. Fake recruiters often pose as staff of a well-known company.
- Pay is mentioned, but the work is vague. Messages promise daily or weekly pay for an “online assessor” or “remote position” without describing the duties.
- You are asked to send money. That might be a fee for training or equipment, a deposit to get more tasks, or a request to cash a check and send part back. The FTC calls paying to get paid “a sure sign of a scam.”
- You are paid to post reviews, ratings or likes. No honest company pays for that.
- You are told to reply “YES” or “INTERESTED.” Scammers use this to confirm your number is active before the pitch.
A few extra checks protect you. Look up the company yourself and apply through its own careers page, not a link in a message. Real interviews happen by phone or video with a named person. Never give your Social Security number or bank details until you have a written offer you have confirmed with the company. The FTC’s job scams guide covers more cases, and you can report a scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
How to Land Your First Remote Job in 30 Days
Most beginners apply too widely and too generically. A narrow, steady plan works better. The schedule below assumes about two hours a day.
Week 1: Pick One Lane and Set Up Your Workspace
Choose one job family from this guide, such as customer support or admin. Read 20 job ads in that family and note the tools and skills that repeat. Then test your setup. Most remote employers ask for a wired internet connection, a USB headset with a noise-cancelling microphone and a quiet room. Run a speed test and save the result, because some applications ask for it.
Week 2: Rebuild Your Résumé Around Transferable Skills
Turn past jobs into proof for the new role. A cashier handled hundreds of customers a shift, counted cash with no errors and solved complaints on the spot. A server worked under pressure and upsold. Put numbers on each line where you can. Keep it to one page, add a skills section with the tools from week 1 and start your chosen certificate or a free course.
Week 3: Apply to 10 to 15 Matched Roles
Apply to a smaller number of jobs that truly fit, and adjust the top third of your résumé for each one. Write a short cover note that names the company and one reason you want to work there. Track every application in a spreadsheet with the date, the role, the link and the contact person. Follow up once by email or LinkedIn after five business days.
Week 4: Prepare for Remote Interviews and Skills Tests
Remote employers often test before they interview. Expect a typing test, a mock chat or email, a short personality survey or a recorded video answer. Practise answers to “Tell me about a time you handled an upset customer” and “How do you stay focused working alone?” On video, test your camera, light and sound 15 minutes early. When an offer arrives, check the pay, schedule and equipment policy. Our salary negotiation email templates help you ask for a little more without risking the offer.
A Worked Pay Example for a Part-Time Start
Many beginners start part time while keeping a current job. At the customer service median of $21.53 an hour, 20 hours a week for 52 weeks comes to $22,391 a year before tax. Full time at 40 hours, the same rate equals $44,782. If you are hired as a contractor rather than an employee, set money aside for self-employment tax, because no employer withholds it for you.
No Degree Needed, Equipment and Spotting Data Entry Scams
What Remote Job Can I Get With No Experience and No Degree?
Customer service, data entry, chat support, order processing and appointment setting are the most common. Most ask for a high school diploma, typing skill and a quiet workspace. IT help desk work is also open without a degree if you earn a beginner certificate first.
Which Entry-Level Remote Job Pays the Most?
Among the roles in this guide, inside sales had the highest BLS median at $33.65 an hour, but much of that pay can come from commission. For steadier pay, IT help desk support had a median of $29.74 and payroll clerks earned $28.01.
Do Remote Employers Send Equipment?
Many large employers ship a laptop or headset, while others expect you to use your own computer. The job ad or offer letter should say which. An employer that sends you a check to buy equipment from its “approved vendor” fits the fake check scam the FTC warns about.
Are Data Entry Jobs From Home Legit?
Some are, but the title is a favourite of scammers. Real data entry jobs come from named companies, involve an interview with a real person and never ask you to pay for training or software. Apply through the company’s own careers page.
How Many Hours a Week Can I Work in Remote Entry-Level Jobs?
Call center and support roles are usually full-time shifts with set hours, including some evenings or weekends. Freelance work, tutoring and AI training platforms are more flexible. DataAnnotation, for example, states it has no minimum hours.
