You can replace most of what a small site uses Ahrefs for without signing up to any recurring plan. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools cover your own backlinks, keywords and technical audits for free. The SEO PowerSuite free version adds rank checks and a 500-URL crawler, and Ubersuggest sells a lifetime plan for a one-time $290 in the US. For competitor data on demand, DataForSEO charges per request instead of per month. The catch is that free tools only see sites you own, so spying on rivals is where you either pay once, pay per use or accept thinner data.
Ahrefs itself now starts at $29 a month for its Starter plan and $129 for Lite, so the stakes are a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a year.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Search Console and Lifetime Ubersuggest
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is the closest free swap. Verified sites get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project each month and Site Explorer with up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords in view.
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools add first-party click, impression and link data that no third-party index can match for your own site.
- SEO PowerSuite’s free version never expires, but it cannot save projects. Its paid licenses are billed every year, from $349, so they are not a way out of subscriptions.
- Ubersuggest’s US lifetime plans cost $290, $490 or $990 once. Over three years, the $290 plan costs less than a tenth of Ahrefs Lite paid monthly.
- DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go for keyword and search result data, but its Backlinks API needs a $100 monthly charge to stay active, which works like a minimum spend.
What You Actually Give Up When You Cancel Ahrefs
Ahrefs does four big jobs: it shows backlinks, it researches keywords, it tracks rankings and it audits websites. The free and one-time tools handle the first and last jobs well for your own site. They struggle with competitor research, because a free account only gets data for websites you can prove you own.
Paid plans can analyze unverified competitor websites, while free accounts are limited to verified ones. Ahrefs also says the underlying tools and data are the same, and subscribers simply get higher allowances. That matters. If most of your Ahrefs use is checking your own site’s links, fixing crawl errors and seeing which pages rank, the subscription was mostly buying convenience.
Competitor backlink research, keyword gap reports and large keyword databases are the hard part. That is where a lifetime plan or a pay-per-request data service earns its place. Before choosing, write down the three reports you opened most in Ahrefs last month. Most small business owners find two of them are about their own site.
Ahrefs Features and Their No-Subscription Substitutes
Each row lists the Ahrefs tool, the best replacement that needs no recurring payment and the main limit to expect. “Free” means no payment at all; “one-time” means a single purchase; “pay-as-you-go” means you only pay for data you request. Prices were checked in November 2026.
| Ahrefs feature | No-subscription substitute | Payment model | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site Explorer: your own backlinks | Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console Links report, Bing Webmaster Tools Backlinks | Free | Verified sites only; AWT shows up to 1,000 backlinks at once |
| Site Explorer: competitor backlinks | DataForSEO Backlinks API, Ubersuggest lifetime, SEO SpyGlass free | Pay-as-you-go, one-time, free | DataForSEO needs a $100 monthly charge while active; SEO SpyGlass free caps at 1,100 backlinks |
| Keywords Explorer | Google Keyword Planner, Bing Keyword Research, Ubersuggest lifetime, DataForSEO keyword data | Free, one-time, pay-as-you-go | Keyword Planner often shows volume ranges, not exact numbers |
| Rank Tracker | Search Console average position, SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker free, DataForSEO SERP API | Free, pay-as-you-go | Free Rank Tracker cannot save history; the API needs some coding |
| Site Audit | Ahrefs Webmaster Tools Site Audit, SEO PowerSuite WebSite Auditor free | Free | 5,000 crawl credits per project per month on AWT; 500 URLs on WebSite Auditor free |
| Organic keywords for your pages | Search Console Performance report, AWT Site Explorer | Free | Search Console’s interface shows the top 1,000 rows |
| Web analytics | Ahrefs Web Analytics (in AWT) | Free | Up to 1 million events per project |
The pattern is clear. Anything about your own site has a free substitute that is as good as Ahrefs or better, because Google and Bing report real clicks rather than estimates. Anything about someone else’s site costs money somewhere, just not necessarily every month.
Free Tools That Replace Ahrefs for Your Own Website
Start here even if you plan to buy something later. These four accounts cost nothing, take about an hour to set up together and give you data that paid tools can only estimate.
1. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: Ahrefs for Free, on Sites You Own

The most direct Ahrefs alternative without a subscription is Ahrefs itself. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (AWT) gives free access to three tools for an unlimited number of verified websites: Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics. You verify ownership once, and the account stays free.
Site Audit gets 5,000 crawl credits per project each month and checks more than 170 SEO issues. Only HTML pages that return a 200 status use credits, so redirects, broken URLs and images do not eat into the allowance. A 3,000-page site can be crawled in full every month with room to spare. Site Explorer shows up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 organic keywords at a time, with sorting and filters. Web Analytics handles up to one million events per project, which is plenty for most small business sites.
What you lose is everything about other people’s sites, plus Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker. Ahrefs also runs free single-lookup tools on its website, such as a backlink checker, which help with a quick look at a rival. For a fuller check on how a single blog post performs, our review of the BlogVitals blog health checker covers another free option.
2. Google Search Console: Real Clicks Instead of Estimates

Google Search Console is free and reports what Google actually saw: the queries people typed, how often your pages appeared, how many clicks they got and the average position. Ahrefs estimates the same numbers from its own crawl and clickstream models. For your own site, Search Console wins on accuracy every time.
The Performance report doubles as a basic rank tracker. Filter by a query, set the date range to the last three months and switch on the average position line. It is not daily tracking by location, but it shows whether a page is climbing or sliding. The Links report lists your top linking sites and most-linked pages. Search Console shows the top 1,000 links and keywords, while Ahrefs says it shows all known ones, so very large sites will hit that ceiling.
3. Bing Webmaster Tools: Backlinks and Keyword Research Built In

Many site owners skip Bing Webmaster Tools because Bing sends less traffic. That is a mistake if you are cutting Ahrefs, because Bing’s free toolset goes further than Google’s in two areas Ahrefs users care about. It has a Backlinks report for your site and a Keyword Research tool that draws on Bing search data. It also includes a Site Scan crawler for technical issues.
Setup is fast because Bing lets you import sites you have already verified in Google Search Console. Treat Bing’s keyword numbers as a second opinion rather than a Google forecast, since its users search differently. Even so, a keyword that shows real demand on both engines is a safer bet than one that appears in a single tool.
4. Google Keyword Planner: Free Keyword Ideas From the Source

Google Keyword Planner lives inside a Google Ads account, and you can use it without running a campaign. It suggests related keywords from a seed term or a competitor’s URL and shows search volume and competition for ads. That URL option is the free way to see which topics a rival’s page is about.
Accounts with little or no ad spend often see search volume as a range rather than an exact figure. For a small business choosing between topics, a range is usually enough to rank ideas by size. What you will not get is Ahrefs-style keyword difficulty, so judge difficulty by searching the term yourself and looking at who ranks.

SEO PowerSuite Free: Desktop Software That Never Expires

SEO PowerSuite is a set of four desktop apps from Link-Assistant: Rank Tracker, WebSite Auditor, SEO SpyGlass for backlinks and LinkAssistant for outreach. Link-Assistant says the free license is “free for as long as you want.” Because the apps run on your computer, the free version also works on competitor sites, which sets it apart from AWT.
The free limits are specific. The bundle allows one project with one competitor, and projects and rank checks cannot be saved. WebSite Auditor’s free license crawls and audits 500 URLs. SEO SpyGlass lets you track and analyze 1,100 backlinks, and LinkAssistant handles 1,000 prospects per project. Data export is not part of the free tier either. In practice, the free version is a tool you open, run a check in and read on screen.
Be careful with the paid upgrade if your goal is avoiding subscriptions. The licenses are billed every year: Professional costs $349 a year, Enterprise $599 and Max+ $899. Longer terms bring the price down, with Professional at $717 for three years. Unused time is not refunded. That makes SEO PowerSuite paid a prepaid subscription, not a lifetime purchase, even if it is far cheaper than Ahrefs over the same period.
| SEO PowerSuite app | Free license limit | Professional | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full bundle | 1 project, no saving | $349/year | $599/year |
| Rank Tracker | 1 competitor per project | $179/year | $419/year |
| WebSite Auditor | 500 URLs crawled and audited | $149/year | $359/year |
| SEO SpyGlass | 1,100 backlinks | $129/year | $259/year |
| LinkAssistant | 1,000 prospects per project | $129/year | $259/year |
Ubersuggest Lifetime: The One-Time Payment Route
Ubersuggest is the best-known SEO suite that still sells a true lifetime plan. In the US, Individual costs a one-time $290, Business at $490 and Enterprise at $990. You get keyword research, competitor domain reports, backlink data, rank tracking and site audits in one login, which is the nearest thing to an all-in-one Ahrefs replacement you can buy once.
Two cautions apply. First, prices are set by country, and some regions see monthly or yearly plans instead. Our comparison of Semrush pricing against its competitors found visitors in India offered subscriptions in rupees, so check what your own region shows at checkout. Second, a lifetime plan is a bet on the company. Ubersuggest’s data is lighter than Ahrefs’, with smaller indexes and fewer controls, and that will not change because you paid upfront.
For a solo blogger or a local business with one or two sites, the trade is attractive. $290 is less than three months of Ahrefs Lite. If Ubersuggest covers 80% of what you did in Ahrefs, the lifetime plan pays for itself before the first quarter ends.
DataForSEO: Pay Only for the Competitor Data You Pull

DataForSEO sells raw SEO data through APIs and describes its model as pay-as-you-go “without restricted API bundles.” You add funds, call the APIs you need and pay per request. It is built for developers, agencies and anyone comfortable with a spreadsheet connector or a short script. If you have never used an API, plan on an afternoon of learning before the first useful report.
The prices are tiny per unit. The Backlinks API costs $0.02 per request plus $0.00003 per row returned, with up to 1,000 rows per request. One request for 1,000 backlinks costs $0.05. The company says $100 buys roughly 660,000 backlinks analyzed, 44,000 or more search result pages on its standard queue, or live metrics for over 440,000 keywords.
There is one important exception to the pay-as-you-go promise. To switch on the Backlinks API, you go through a payment form that charges $100 a month. The money lands in your balance and can be spent on any DataForSEO API, so it is not lost, but it does work like a monthly minimum while backlink access is active. Keyword and search result data do not carry that condition on the same page, so a keyword-only setup stays truly pay-per-use.
A Worked Example: Tracking Rivals for Pennies
Say a small agency wants the top 1,000 backlinks for 10 competitors once a month and weekly rankings for 100 keywords. The backlink pull is 10 requests at $0.05 each, or $0.50 a month. The rank checks come to about 433 search result pages a month (100 keywords times 52 weeks, divided by 12). At DataForSEO’s own figure of 44,000 pages for $100, that is roughly $0.98 a month.
| Task | Monthly volume | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1,000 backlinks for 10 competitors | 10 requests, 10,000 rows | $0.50 |
| Weekly ranks for 100 keywords | About 433 search result pages | About $0.98 |
| Total data used | About $1.48 | |
| Cash committed if Backlinks API is active | $100 charge, kept as balance |
The data costs under $2, but the $100 Backlinks charge recurs each month while that API is switched on. The smart move is to activate backlinks only in the months you run a link audit. For rank tracking and keyword research alone, $100 of balance could last this agency years.
Three Years of Ahrefs vs Paying Once
Monthly prices hide how quickly software bills stack up. Over 36 months, Ahrefs Lite paid monthly costs $4,644, and even the cut-down Starter plan adds up to $1,044. Ahrefs offers a discount of up to 17% for annual billing, but that is still a recurring commitment.

| Option | How you pay | Year one | Three years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 a month | $1,548 | $4,644 |
| Ahrefs Starter | $29 a month | $348 | $1,044 |
| SEO PowerSuite Professional | $717 for a three-year license | $717 upfront | $717 |
| Ubersuggest Individual (US) | $290 one time | $290 | $290 |
| Free stack: AWT, Search Console, Bing, SEO PowerSuite free | No payment | $0 | $0 |
Prices exclude sales tax. To see whether any paid tool earns its keep, put its yearly cost into our break-even calculator and check how many extra sales or clients it must bring in. Freelancers can also build the cost into their rates with the freelance hourly rate calculator.
Which No-Subscription Setup Fits Your Situation
There is no single winner, because the right mix depends on how much competitor research you do. These four setups cover most readers.
- Local business with one website: AWT, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. You care about your own pages, your reviews and your map listing far more than a rival’s link profile, and all three accounts are free.
- Blogger or affiliate site owner: the free stack plus Ubersuggest Individual at $290 once. Keyword research is the job you do every week, and the lifetime plan covers it without a monthly bill.
- Freelance SEO with a few clients: AWT for each client site (ask clients to verify you), SEO PowerSuite free for quick competitor checks and Ubersuggest for keyword work. Client sites you can verify get full free AWT access.
- Agency or technical marketer: DataForSEO for competitor and ranking data, pulled into a spreadsheet or dashboard. Switch the Backlinks API on only during link audits to avoid the $100 monthly charge.
Our view: most small businesses paying for Ahrefs would lose very little by moving to the free stack, because their questions are about their own site. The people who should keep a subscription are those who pitch new clients weekly or run content gap reports on dozens of rivals. Getting the Free Stack Running in One Afternoon
Verify your site in Google Search Console first, using a DNS record if you can, because a domain-level property covers every subdomain and protocol. Then sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools and import the site from Search Console, which skips a second verification step.
Next, create an AWT account and connect it to Search Console, which is one of Ahrefs’ accepted verification routes. Run the first Site Audit straight away so you have a baseline of errors. Finally, install SEO PowerSuite free on your computer, run Rank Tracker for your 20 most important keywords and note the positions in a spreadsheet, since the free license will not save them for you. Repeat the rank check on the same day each month and you have a working tracker with no bill attached.
Competitor Backlinks Without a Monthly Fee and Free Crawlers
Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools Really Free?
Yes. AWT costs nothing for an unlimited number of verified websites and includes Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics. The limits are 5,000 crawl credits per project per month and up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords in view at once.
Does Ahrefs Offer a Lifetime Deal?
No. Ahrefs sells its paid plans as subscriptions billed monthly or annually, from $29 a month for Starter. Its free option is Webmaster Tools. For a one-time payment, Ubersuggest’s US lifetime plans start at $290.
How Can I Check a Competitor’s Backlinks Without Paying Monthly?
SEO PowerSuite’s free SEO SpyGlass analyzes up to 1,100 backlinks for any site. For larger pulls, DataForSEO charges $0.05 for a request returning 1,000 backlinks, although the Backlinks API carries a $100 monthly charge that stays in your balance while it is active.
Can Google Search Console Replace Ahrefs?
For your own site, largely yes. It shows real queries, clicks, impressions, average position and top linking sites. It cannot show competitor data, keyword difficulty or links beyond its top 1,000 rows, so pair it with AWT and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Is There a Free Site Audit Crawler Without a Subscription?
Yes. SEO PowerSuite’s WebSite Auditor crawls and audits 500 URLs on its free license, and AWT’s Site Audit handles 5,000 crawl credits per project each month on verified sites. Both cover broken links, redirects and on-page issues.
