Simón Borrero, Co-Founder and CEO of Rappi in Bogotá

Simón Borrero co-founded Rappi in Bogotá in 2015 with Sebastián Mejía and Felipe Villamarín and has led the company as chief executive officer since then. The service began with a team of eight people as a delivery option for neighborhood stores, and a free-text box that let users request anything shaped its later products.

From Imaginamos and Grability to Rappi

Borrero studied business administration and economics at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, where he also took a night course in web programming. He built two technology companies before Rappi.

  • Grability: a mobile commerce platform for supermarkets formed by people from Imaginamos, where the idea for Rappi took shape
  • 2015: co-founded Rappi with Sebastián Mejía and Felipe Villamarín
  • 2015 to present: chief executive officer of Rappi

Rappi Delivery and Payments Across Nine Latin American Countries

Rappi runs an app for delivery from restaurants, supermarkets and stores, along with financial services such as RappiPay. It operates in Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, covering about 400 cities. In 2025 the company had about 8,000 direct employees.

Profitability and Plans for a Public Listing

By mid-2025 Rappi had completed four consecutive profitable quarters with positive EBITDA while continuing to reinvest in growth, and its average delivery time stood at 10.6 minutes. The company is considering a listing in New York, possibly preceded by a pre-IPO funding round, and is studying entry into three more countries. After selling RappiCard in Mexico to Banorte, Rappi remained a commercial partner of the bank.
