Olivia is still the most popular baby girl name in the United States and in England and Wales, but cross a border and the leader changes. Charlotte tops the lists in Canada, New South Wales and Victoria. Freya leads in Scotland, Lily in Ireland, Isla in New Zealand, Louise in France and Sophia in Germany. In Japan the top name is written with a single character, 翠. We gathered the latest official or most widely cited ranking for each country below, with the data year stated for every list. All rankings cover babies born or registered in 2025.

Most of these come from civil registration or social security records, which cover almost all births. Germany’s list is compiled by a language society from registry office data, and Japan’s comes from an insurer’s survey of its policyholders’ babies, so treat those two as strong indicators rather than full counts.
United States: Olivia Leads Again
The Social Security Administration released its 2025 rankings on 8 May 2026, based on applications for Social Security cards. Australia and New Zealand
Australia has no single national register; each state’s Births, Deaths and Marriages office publishes its own list. In New South Wales, the most populous state, Charlotte was the top girls’ name of 2025, the NSW Government announced on 26 March 2026. Amira, Mabel, Maggie and Celine were new to its top 100.
Victoria released its list on 1 January 2026, covering names registered up to 29 December 2025, according to the Premier of Victoria’s office. New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs followed on 9 January 2026, 1News reported, with Isla beating Charlotte by a single registration.

| 10 | Ava (230) | Mia (125) |
Hazel is the name to watch in this part of the world: third in Victoria and fourth in New Zealand, yet absent from the US, English and Scottish top 10s.
France: Louise Leads a Very French Top 10
Insee, the French statistics office, published its Top 10 des prénoms en France en 2025 on 16 July 2026. Only Emma overlaps with the English-speaking lists. Insee rounds its counts to the nearest five.

Germany: Sophia and Sofia Counted Together
Germany has no official government ranking. The most cited list comes from the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache (GfdS), a language society that collects data from registry offices. Its 2025 list, reported by the Berliner Zeitung on 9 June 2026, covers about 90.9% of first names given that year and counts different spellings of the same name together.
| Rank | Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sophia/Sofia |
| 2 | Emma |
| 3 | Emilia |
| 4 | Mia |
| 5 | Lina |
Japan: Ranked by Kanji, Not Sound
The long-running reference is Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance’s annual survey of names among babies born to its policyholders. Because Japanese names are ranked by the characters used, one name can have several readings. The 2025 results, summarised by Nippon.com, put 翠 first.
| Rank | Kanji | Common Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 翠 | Sui, Midori |
| 2 | 陽葵 | Himari |
| 3 | 紬 | Tsumugi |
| 4 | 茉白 | Mashiro |
| 5 | 凛 | Rin |
| 6 | 陽菜 | Hina |
| 7 | 心陽 | Koharu |
| 8 (tie) | 彩葉 | Iroha, Ayaha |
| 8 (tie) | 詩 | Uta |
| 10 (tie) | 琴葉 | Kotoha |
| 10 (tie) | 結菜 | Yuna, Yuina |
Other surveys can produce different orders. A separate 2025 survey by baby retailer Akachan Honpo, based on 6,085 members, also put 翠 first for girls, which suggests the result is not a quirk of one sample.
What the Lists Have in Common
We compared the six full top-10 lists above (US, England and Wales, Scotland, Victoria, New Zealand and France). Counting appearances gives a rough picture of which names travel best.
| Name | Top-10 Appearances (of 6) | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Olivia | 5 | US, England and Wales, Scotland, Victoria, New Zealand |
| Amelia | 5 | US, England and Wales, Scotland, Victoria, New Zealand |
| Lily | 4 | England and Wales, Scotland, Victoria, New Zealand |
| Isla | 4 | England and Wales, Scotland, Victoria, New Zealand |
| Charlotte | 3 | US, Victoria, New Zealand |
| Mia | 3 | US, Victoria, New Zealand |
- English-speaking countries share a pool: Olivia, Amelia, Charlotte, Isla and Lily dominate from Edinburgh to Auckland. Isla is far more popular in the UK, Australia and New Zealand than in the US top 10, where it does not appear.
- Language shapes the rest: France’s list is almost entirely French names, Ireland puts two Irish-language names in its top three, and Japan’s rankings are not comparable with Western ones at all.
- Spelling rules change the winner: Germany counts Sophia and Sofia together; the US counts them apart. A merged US count would lift the name.
- Small margins decide some titles: Isla beat Charlotte in New Zealand by one baby, and Freya beat Isla in Scotland by 15.
If you are turning counts into shares, the percentage calculator does it in a click, and new parents can use the age calculator to track a baby’s age in days. The same thinking that goes into a baby’s name also applies to naming a venture; our business name generator is a quick place to start.
