Roughly one American boy in every 218 born between 2020 and 2025 was named Alexander. That makes it the most-used boys’ name starting with A over the period, at 51,145 babies and 17th overall in Social Security Administration records. In 2025 alone, though, Asher led the letter, followed by Alexander, Anthony, Aiden and Angel, according to Nancy’s Baby Names’ breakdown of the SSA’s 2025 data. Below are more than 100 boys’ names starting with A, grouped into popular, classic, short, unique and by origin, each with its meaning and language of origin. Popularity figures are for the United States.

Alexander Leads 2020 to 2025, Asher Wins 2025 Alone

  • Alexander is the top A name for US boys born 2020 to 2025 (rank 17, 51,145 babies), with Asher close behind at rank 22.
  • In 2025 alone, Asher was the most popular A name, ahead of Alexander, Anthony, Aiden and Angel.
  • Twenty-six A names made the SSA’s top 200 for 2020 to 2025, from Alexander at 17 to Alex at 200.
  • Spellings split the count: Aiden (42,793) and Ayden (12,804) together total 55,597, more than Alexander.
  • Many A names come from Hebrew, Greek and Latin, but Sanskrit, Arabic, Irish and Japanese all supply popular choices too.

A note on sources. Rankings come straight from the SSA, which counts every name given to at least five babies of one sex in a year, using Social Security card applications. Meanings and origins follow Behind the Name, the long-running etymology reference, and standard name dictionaries. Where a name’s origin is disputed or unknown, we say so rather than repeat a popular but unsupported meaning.

Ranks and counts: Social Security Administration, top 200 names for babies born 2020 to 2025.

A few patterns stand out. Old Testament names (Asher, Aaron, Adam, Adriel) sit comfortably beside mythological ones like Atlas, and word names like Ace and Archer. Spanish forms also rank well: Angel, Antonio and Alejandro are all in the top 200.

What Changed in 2025

The six-year ranking smooths out short-term moves. For 2025 on its own, Asher overtook Alexander as the most-used A name, and Anthony moved ahead of Aiden. The SSA’s 2025 announcement, published on 8 May 2026, also named Akari among the boys’ names that climbed fastest that year. None of the 2025 top 10 (led by Liam, Noah and Oliver) starts with A.

Classic Boy Names Starting With A

These names have long histories in English-speaking countries and Europe. Two of them, Arthur and August, also sit inside the SSA’s current top 130.

Alfred and Alvin share the Old English element ælf, meaning “elf”. Albert, Archibald and Arnold come from Germanic compounds, which is why their meanings read like two words stuck together.

Unique Boy Names Starting With A

None of these appears in the SSA’s top 200 for 2020 to 2025, so a boy given one is unlikely to share it with a classmate. All are established names with documented histories rather than invented spellings.

How to Choose an A Name for Your Son

Naming a child is a long-term decision taken with very little data, which is why a few simple checks help.

  • Add up the spellings: the SSA counts each spelling separately, so a name can be more common than its rank suggests. Aiden ranks 37th and Ayden 174th, but together they reach 55,597 boys, more than Alexander’s 51,145. Alexander and Alex combined come to 62,299.
  • Check the trend, not only the rank: a name rising fast, like Asher, will be more common among your son’s classmates than its six-year rank implies. The SSA’s name database shows each name’s rank year by year back to 1880, and by state.
  • Say it with the surname: names ending in a vowel sound, such as Arlo or Amari, can run into surnames that start with one. Try the full name out loud a dozen times.
  • Write the initials: with a middle name added, some combinations spell awkward words on luggage tags and email addresses.
  • Think about nicknames: Alexander yields Alex, Xander and Sasha; Augustine yields Gus. If you dislike every likely nickname, pick a shorter name.
  • Check the meaning in other languages: for families with roots in more than one country, a name that is neutral in one language can carry an odd meaning in another.

If you are also weighing names for a daughter, our roundup of top baby girl names by country covers the official lists from a dozen countries. Parents tracking milestones can use the age calculator to work out a baby’s exact age in months and days, and the percentage calculator turns SSA counts into shares. And if the naming bug spreads to a side business, our business name generator applies the same logic of sound, meaning and memorability to brands.
