A $24.99 kitchen gadget that costs $6 to make keeps about $6.23 per sale once Amazon’s referral fee, the 2026 FBA fee, storage, 15% advertising cost of sale and a small returns allowance are paid. That is a 24.9% margin, and the price can fall to $16.09 before every sale loses money. The free Amazon seller profit calculator below runs those numbers for your own product, on Amazon.com or Amazon.in, for FBA or for orders you ship yourself.
For US sellers it fills in the 2026 fees from a category, size tier and shipping weight. For India it takes your fee figures and handles GST. Every default below was checked on 30 October 2026.
Referral Fees, the 2026 FBA Rate Card and the Fuel Surcharge
- Net profit per unit = selling price minus product cost, inbound shipping, referral fee, fulfilment fee, storage, advertising and a returns allowance.
- Most US categories pay a 15% referral fee with a $0.30 minimum. Consumer electronics and computers pay 8%; Amazon device accessories pay 45%.
- The 2026 US FBA rate card took effect on 15 January 2026, with three price bands: under $10, $10 to $50 and over $50. A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge has applied on top since 17 April 2026.
- Break-even price is found by testing prices until profit reaches zero, because referral tiers and FBA price bands both move with the price.

What Amazon Takes From a $24.99 Sale
Press Load US FBA example to see this case: a Home and Kitchen item in a 9 × 6 × 3 inch box weighing 12 ounces shipped (large standard), selling 300 units a month after about a month in storage between January and September, with 15% ACoS and 3% returns, half resellable.
| Line | How it is worked out | Per unit |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | Price before sales tax | $24.99 |
| Product cost and inbound freight | $6.00 + $0.60 | −$6.60 |
| Referral fee | 15% of $24.99 | −$3.75 |
| FBA fulfilment fee | $4.20 (large standard, 8+ to 12 oz, $10 to $50) × 1.035 | −$4.35 |
| Monthly storage | 0.094 cubic feet × $0.78 × 1 month | −$0.07 |
| Advertising | 15% ACoS × $24.99 | −$3.75 |
| Returns allowance | 3% × ($4.35 + $0.60 + 50% of $6.00) | −$0.24 |
| Net profit | Margin 24.9%, ROI 94.5% | $6.23 |
At 300 units the month brings in about $1,870 before the $39.99 Professional selling plan, or $1,830 after it. Notice that advertising costs as much as the referral fee. If you track ad spend across channels, our piece on blended CAC versus paid CAC explains which acquisition cost to feed into the ad field.
US Referral Fee Rates Used by the Calculator
The referral fee is charged on the total sales price, with a per-item minimum in most categories. Thresholds work two ways: in Beauty, Baby, Clothing and Grocery the whole price takes its band’s rate, while in Electronics Accessories, Furniture, Jewelry and Watches only the part above the threshold gets the lower rate. Rates as of October 2026:
| Category | Referral fee | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories, including Home and Kitchen, Toys and Sports | 15% | $0.30 |
| Beauty, Health and Personal Care; Baby Products | 8% if the price is $10 or less, 15% above | $0.30 |
| Clothing and Accessories | 5% up to $15, 10% from $15 to $20, 17% above $20 | $0.30 |
| Grocery and Gourmet | 8% up to $15, 15% above | None |
| Consumer Electronics; Computers | 8% | $0.30 |
| Electronics Accessories | 15% on the first $100, 8% on the rest | $0.30 |
| Furniture | 15% on the first $200, 10% on the rest | $0.30 |
| Jewelry | 20% on the first $250, 5% on the rest | $0.30 |
| Watches | 16% on the first $1,500, 3% on the rest | $0.30 |
| Automotive and Powersports | 12% | $0.30 |
| Pet Products (veterinary diets) | 15% (22%) | $0.30 |
| Amazon Device Accessories | 45% | $0.30 |
| Books, Music, Video and DVD, Software | 15% plus a $1.80 closing fee | None |
The 2026 FBA Rate Card, Surcharge and Peak Season
Amazon’s October 2025 announcement said FBA fees would rise by an average of $0.08 a unit from 15 January 2026, after no increase in 2025. The calculator holds the full non-peak, non-apparel rate card from that date for small standard, large standard, small bulky, large bulky and extra-large items. A sample of the standard-size rows:
| Size tier and shipping weight | Under $10 | $10 to $50 | Over $50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard, 2 oz or less | $2.43 | $3.32 | $3.58 |
| Large standard, 4 oz or less | $2.91 | $3.73 | $3.99 |
| Large standard, 8+ to 12 oz | $3.38 | $4.20 | $4.46 |
| Large standard, 3+ to 20 lb | $6.15 + $0.08 per 4 oz above 3 lb | $6.97 + $0.08 per 4 oz | $7.23 + $0.08 per 4 oz |
Two adjustments sit on top. Since 17 April 2026 Amazon has added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to US fulfilment fees, about $0.17 a unit on average by its own estimate. The calculator adds it unless you untick the box. Fulfilment fees are also higher in the peak period from 15 October 2026 to 14 January 2027; AMZ Prep’s rate summary puts the average increase at $0.32 a unit. If you are pricing for that window, type the fee from your fee preview into the override box.
Storage is charged per cubic foot each month: $0.78 for standard-size items and $0.56 for bulky items from January to September, rising to $2.40 and $1.40 from October to December.
FBA or FBM: Same Product, Different Profit
Switch the example to FBM and replace the FBA fee and storage with your own costs: say $5.50 for postage and $0.40 for the box and packing time. Profit falls to $4.71 a unit and break-even rises to $18.27. For this light item FBA wins by about $1.50 a unit. Slow sellers in big boxes can flip that result once months of storage are counted, so run both settings with your own carrier rates.
Amazon.in Profit With GST in the Price
India mode takes the referral percentage, closing fee and FBA or Easy Ship fee from your listing’s fee preview, plus storage per unit. Your selling price includes GST, so the calculator divides it by 1 plus your product’s rate and treats the difference as tax you pass on. Amazon’s fee invoice carries GST too; tick the input tax credit box if you claim it back.
The India example uses illustrative figures: a ₹999 item in the 18% GST slab costing ₹320, with a 10% referral fee, ₹20 closing fee, ₹65 FBA fee, ₹5 storage, 18% GST on fees, 12% ACoS and 5% returns. Profit comes to ₹189.83 a unit, a 19.0% margin, with break-even at ₹696.47. Without input tax credit on the ₹34 of GST on fees, profit drops to ₹155.65. Your sales invoices still need correct GST details, which our free invoice generator handles.
How Ads and Returns Move the Break-Even Price
- ACoS or PPC per unit: ACoS scales with price, so it raises the break-even price in step. If most of your sales are organic, use total ad spend divided by total sales (often called TACoS) rather than campaign ACoS, or switch to PPC cost per unit sold.
- Returns: each return costs the fulfilment fee and inbound freight already spent, plus the product itself when it cannot be resold. The calculator spreads that over every unit at your returns rate.
- Price bands: dropping from $10.49 to $9.99 moves an item into the cheaper under-$10 FBA band and, in Beauty or Baby, the 8% referral rate. The break-even search allows for these jumps.
If ACoS plus the referral rate passes 100% of the price, no price can break even and the calculator says so. For the fixed-cost side of the business, such as software, salaries and samples, use our break-even calculator to find the monthly units that cover them, and the percentage calculator to turn margin targets into markups. Amazon’s Cut per Sale, ROI vs Margin and Plan Costs
How Much Does Amazon Take Per Sale?
In most US categories, a 15% referral fee plus the FBA fee if Amazon ships the order. On the $24.99 example, those two come to $8.10, or 32% of the price, before storage and advertising.
What Is a Good Profit Margin on Amazon?
Measure it after advertising and returns as well as Amazon’s fees. A product at 40% before ads falls to the mid-20s once a 15% ACoS is counted.
What Is the Difference Between ROI and Margin?
Margin divides profit by the selling price. ROI divides profit by the money you put into each unit: product cost plus inbound freight. The example’s $6.23 profit is a 24.9% margin and a 94.5% return on $6.60.
Does the Fuel and Logistics Surcharge Apply to Every FBA Order?
In the US it adds 3.5% to FBA fulfilment fees from 17 April 2026. It is charged on the fee, not on the selling price.
What Does the Professional Selling Plan Cost?
$39.99 a month on Amazon.com, against $0.99 per item sold on the Individual plan. The calculator subtracts the Professional fee from monthly profit unless you untick it.
