Indian passport holders can enter about two dozen countries with no visa at all, from Nepal and Bhutan next door to Thailand, Malaysia, Mauritius, the Maldives, Fiji and much of the Caribbean. Add the countries that stamp a visa on arrival and the handful that only want an online travel authorization, and the list of places reachable without an embassy appointment runs past 50. The Henley Passport Index for October 2026 puts India 84th, level with Algeria and Mauritania, with 55 destinations open without a prior visa.
That number is two lower than a year ago, even though the rank improved by one place. The biggest single change for Indian tourists this year came from Bangkok: Thailand halved its visa-free stay to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Every table below was checked against official notices and current reporting as of October 2026.
India at 84th: Visa-Free Entry, Arrival Visas and Online Permits
- India ranks 84th on the October 2026 Henley Passport Index with 55 destinations, down from 57 in October 2025.
- Truly visa-free destinations include Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand (30 days), Malaysia (30 days, extended to 31 December 2026), the Maldives and Mauritius (90 days each) and the Philippines (14 days).
- Visa on arrival is available in Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Jordan, Tanzania and Ethiopia, among others, usually for 30 to 90 days.
- Sri Lanka and Kenya need a short online authorization before you fly; Sri Lanka’s is free for Indians.
- Iran ended visa-free entry for Indians on 22 November 2025, and Thailand cut its stay from 60 to 30 days on 15 September 2026.
Where the Indian Passport Ranks in 2026
Henley & Partners ranks passports by how many of 227 destinations a holder can enter without obtaining a visa in advance. Visa on arrival and electronic travel authorizations count as access; a full e-visa that must be approved before travel does not. India started 2026 at 80th with 55 destinations and sits at 84th in the October edition, released on 9 October. Singapore tops the Henley ranking with 193 destinations, while Japan, South Korea and the UAE share second place at 188.
| Henley edition | India’s rank | Visa-free score |
|---|---|---|
| — | — | — |
| October 2025 | 85th | 57 |
| January 2026 | 80th | 55 |
| October 2026 | 84th | 55 |
Do not expect the tables in this guide to add up to exactly 55. Henley groups some territories differently, and country-level lists compiled from immigration rules, such as the country-by-country summary on Wikipedia that many travel desks use as a starting point, also include overseas territories such as Montserrat and the Cook Islands. Rules also move between index updates. The stay lengths below are what matters at the border.

Visa on Arrival Countries for Indians
Visa on arrival means you still get a visa, but at the airport or land border rather than at an embassy. Expect a fee, a queue, and an officer who can ask for a return ticket, a hotel booking and proof of funds. Several of these countries also run an e-visa, which is usually the smoother option because you land with approval in hand.
| Region | Country | Allowed stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| — | — | — | — |
| Southeast Asia | Indonesia | 30 days | Tourism; fee of IDR 500,000 |
| Southeast Asia | Cambodia | 30 days | E-visa also available |

Conditional Visa on Arrival for Indians Who Already Hold Another Visa
A valid US, UK or Schengen visa opens more doors than the tables above suggest. The UAE gives Indians a 14-day visa on arrival if they hold a valid US visa or green card, or a UK or EU residence permit, and in February 2025 it extended this to residence permits from Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Oman offers a 14-day visa on arrival to Indians holding a valid Australian, Canadian, Japanese, UK, US or Schengen visa or residence permit, and to GCC residents. Bahrain has a similar route for GCC residents and holders of specified visas. Kyrgyzstan allows 7 days visa-free at Manas airport with a tour voucher worth at least USD 500 and a return ticket. Carry the original visa sticker or card, because airlines check it at check-in before you ever see an immigration officer.
Countries That Need an eTA or Online Travel Authorization
An electronic travel authorization is a short online screening, usually approved within days, that you complete before flying. It is lighter than an e-visa, and Henley counts it as visa-free access.
| Country | Allowed stay | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| — | — | — |
| Sri Lanka | 30 days | Free ETA for Indian tourists; apply on the official Sri Lanka ETA portal |
| Kenya | 90 days | Apply on the official eTA site before travel; yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic area |
| Seychelles | 3 months | Online travel authorization through the Electronic Border System, valid for one journey |
| Saint Kitts and Nevis | 3 months | Online authorization before travel |
Sri Lanka’s free ETA is part of a 40-country scheme reported by Travel Trade Journal. Kenya dropped visas for all visitors in favor of its eTA, so Indians pay the eTA fee instead of a visa fee.
E-Visa Countries for Indians: Online Approval Before You Fly
These countries are not visa-free, but you never visit an embassy. You upload a passport scan and photo, pay online and print the approval. Processing runs from a day to a couple of weeks. Stays below are the maximum per e-visa as listed in the country-by-country summary as of October 2026.
| Region | Countries and maximum stay |
|---|---|
| — | — |
| Southeast and East Asia | Vietnam (up to 90 days, multiple entry, via the official e-visa portal), Cambodia 30 days, Laos 30 days, Myanmar 28 days, Mongolia 30 days, Japan (eVisa for short stays) |
| Central Asia and the Caucasus | Uzbekistan 30 days, Kyrgyzstan 60 days, Tajikistan 60 days, Georgia 30 days, Azerbaijan 30 days |
| Europe | Russia 30 days, Serbia 90 days, Albania 90 days, Ukraine 30 days |
| Middle East | Israel 90 days, Jordan 30 days, Bahrain 14 days, Iraq 30 days, Iran 30 days |
| North Africa | Egypt 30 days, Morocco 30 days |
| Sub-Saharan Africa | Uganda 3 months, Zambia 90 days, Namibia 3 months, Botswana 3 months, Nigeria 30 days, Côte d’Ivoire 3 months, Djibouti 90 days, Gabon 90 days, Guinea 90 days, Malawi 30 days, Mozambique 30 days, Benin 30 days, Togo 15 days |
| Americas and Pacific | Cuba 90 days, Suriname 90 days, Papua New Guinea 30 days |
What Changed for Indian Travelers in 2025 and 2026
Most of the movement over the past two years has been in Southeast Asia and the Gulf, which happen to be where Indians travel most.
- Thailand cut visa-free stay to 30 days (15 September 2026): Indians stay visa-free, but for half as long. Since 1 May 2025, every arrival also needs the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, filed online before landing.
- Malaysia extended visa-free entry to 31 December 2026: The 30-day exemption, first offered in December 2023, now runs through the end of this year. Watch for a decision on 2027 before booking trips for January.
- Iran ended visa-free entry (22 November 2025): Tehran suspended the waiver after Indians lured by fake job offers were kidnapped, and the Ministry of External Affairs warned travelers against agents promising onward travel or jobs. Indians now need an e-visa or embassy visa.
- Philippines opened visa-free entry (May 2025): 14 days for every Indian passport holder, 30 days for those with qualifying Western or Asian visas.
- Sri Lanka made its ETA free: Indian tourists no longer pay for the 30-day authorization.
- UAE widened visa on arrival (13 February 2025): Residence permits from six more countries now qualify Indians for the 14-day stamp.
- Henley score slipped to 55: Rank improved to 84th in October 2026, but India lost two destinations compared with October 2025.
Documents to Carry at a Visa-Free or Visa on Arrival Border
Visa-free does not mean question-free. Immigration officers in Thailand, Malaysia and the Gulf routinely ask Indian visitors for supporting papers, and airlines can deny boarding if the destination’s rules are not met.
- Passport valid for six months: Most countries expect at least six months of validity from your arrival date and two blank pages. Bhutan states the six-month rule explicitly.
- Confirmed return or onward ticket: Qatar, Angola and the Philippines name this as a condition, and most others ask for it in practice.
- Hotel bookings for the whole stay: Printed or on your phone. Qatar requires the booking to be made through Discover Qatar.
- Proof of funds: Recent bank statements, an international debit or forex card, or cash in a convertible currency. Officers rarely ask, but a traveler with a one-way ticket and no money is the case they are trained to stop.
- Arrival cards filed online: Thailand’s TDAC and the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card must be completed before you land.
- Vaccination certificates: Kenya and Angola ask for yellow fever or other certificates. India also requires a valid yellow fever certificate from travelers returning from yellow-fever countries in Africa and South America, so get vaccinated before an East Africa trip even if the destination does not insist.
- Passport-size photos and cash for fees: Visa on arrival counters in Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos take card or cash, but photo booths and ATMs at land borders are unreliable.
Planning a Trip: Picking the Right Entry Route
Start with how long you want to stay. A 10-day Thailand trip is still visa-free, but a month-long workation now runs into the new 30-day limit. Bali works on a 30-day visa on arrival; Indonesia also sells the same visa online in advance as an electronic visa on arrival, which saves time in the queue at Ngurah Rai. For Vietnam, there is no visa-free option at all, but the 90-day multiple-entry e-visa is one of the most generous in Asia.
Bhutan deserves its own budget line. The Sustainable Development Fee is ₹1,200 per day, so a six-day trip adds ₹7,200 to the cost before hotels or transport. Nepal has no such fee and no permit for most of the country, which is why it remains the simplest foreign trip an Indian can make by road.
For long-haul trips, the Caribbean visa-free group is wider than many travelers assume, but flights almost always connect through the US, UK, Canada or Europe. Each of those countries needs a transit visa or transit authorization unless you qualify for an exemption, so check the transit rules before buying a cheap ticket via London or New York. To match local times for connecting flights, the Bizolaunch flight time calculator and time zone converter help, and the public holidays by country list flags local closures before you book.
Visa-Free Travel for Indians: Common Questions
How Many Countries Can Indians Visit Without a Visa in 2026?
The Henley Passport Index counts 55 destinations for the Indian passport in October 2026, including visa on arrival and eTA countries. Strictly visa-free countries, with no paperwork at all, number about two dozen, plus several overseas territories.
Is Thailand Still Visa-Free for Indians?
Yes. Since 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days instead of 60. You must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before arrival.
Can Indians Go to Dubai Without a Visa?
Only if they qualify for the UAE’s visa on arrival, which requires a valid US visa or green card, or a residence permit from the UK, EU or one of the six other listed countries. Everyone else needs a UAE visa arranged before travel.
Do Indians Need a Passport for Nepal and Bhutan?
No. An Indian passport or an Election Commission voter ID card works for both. Bhutan still requires an entry permit, issued at the border or Paro airport, and the ₹1,200 daily fee.
Which Visa-Free Country Gives Indians the Longest Stay?
Dominica allows six months, followed by Fiji at four months and Vanuatu at 120 days. Nepal has no fixed limit because of the open-border treaty with India.
