How Startups Pick a Domain Before They Have a Product
Investors, hires and early customers all judge a startup partly by its domain, and switching later is painful. Rebranding after a seed round means new decks, new email addresses, redirects and lost search history. Spend a week on this before you file the company.
A short .com is still the first choice for most founders. Two-syllable invented words and two-word compounds such as “kitebase.com” are where most usable .com names now sit. If your exact word is taken, the common workarounds are a prefix (“get”, “try”, “use”) or a suffix (“hq”, “app”, “labs”). Plenty of funded companies started on “getname.com” and bought the plain version later.
Tech endings carry their own signals. Developers read .io and .dev as tooling, and .ai as an AI product. The .app and .dev endings only load over HTTPS, which is fine for any modern site. The .ai ending is Anguilla’s country code, costs more than a .com and needs a two-year registration at minimum. Watch renewal prices on all of these.
If you sell mainly in one country, its ending can beat a weak .com: .in for India, .co.uk for the UK, .de for Germany or .com.au for Australia. Check the local presence rules first, since several country registries require a local address or company.
Other checks:
- Length: six to ten letters before the ending is a good range. It fits in an app icon label and a pitch deck footer.
- Pronunciation: say it once on a call and ask the other person to type it. If they misspell it, so will investors.
- Keyword or brandable: a keyword domain like “salonbookdesk.com” explains the product on day one. A brandable name gives you room to pivot, which many startups do.
- Social handles: match the X, LinkedIn and GitHub organization names to the domain. Recruits and investors look you up on all three.

Securing the Startup Domain, Email and Trademark
Check the domain in ICANN Lookup or your registrar. If it is registered but unused, the lookup shows the registrar, and you can make an anonymous offer through a broker. Our domain name generator shows which endings are open for the same word. Register the domain in the company’s name. Investors check who owns it during due diligence.
For hosting, a landing page with a waitlist form is enough on day one. Point the domain at it and confirm the SSL certificate is active.
Set up professional email on the domain straight away, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records in place. Cold emails to investors and first customers from a free mailbox get ignored, and outreach from a new domain without these records often lands in spam.
Run a trademark search in each market you plan to sell in: USPTO in the US, the UK IPO, EUIPO in Europe and IP India. Search the classes for software and online services. A clash found after launch can force a rebrand at the worst time.
Form the company under the same name. Founders raising from US investors often form a Delaware C corporation; others start with an LLC or LLP, covered in our US LLP guide. In India, reserve the name with the MCA through SPICe+ or RUN, or see registering an LLP in India. In the UK, Companies House name rules apply. If the name is still open, browse the business name ideas hub or try our business name generator.
Claim the X, LinkedIn, GitHub and Product Hunt names the same day. Before you spend on ads, model your runway with the break-even calculator.
Startup Domains Investors and Users Stumble On
- Hyphens. They look like a fallback and lose type-in traffic to the unhyphenated owner.
- Numbers. “2” or “4” in a startup domain gets spelled out by half the people who hear it.
- Names close to a funded company. A domain one letter away from a known startup or big tech product invites a trademark complaint and confuses search.
- Expired domains with a spam past. Check old snapshots in a web archive and search the domain in quotes. A domain that once hosted spam may struggle in search and email delivery.
- Renewal price traps. Premium domains and some new endings renew at hundreds of dollars a year. Read the renewal line before you pay.
- Country endings with unstable rules. A few country endings have changed policy or ownership over the years. For a company you hope to run for a decade, keep a .com or your home ending as a fallback.
- A name tied to your first feature. “invoicescanapp.com” becomes a problem when you pivot to payroll.
