Choosing a Tech Blog Domain That Sounds Credible
A .com is still the default for a tech blog that wants a general audience. Readers who arrive from a search result or a shared link will type .com when they come back, and advertisers expect it on a media kit.
Tech readers accept more endings than most audiences do. These are the ones that fit:
- .dev suits blogs about programming. Browsers only load .dev sites over HTTPS, so you need an SSL certificate from the first day.
- .app works for app reviews and follows the same HTTPS rule.
- .io is the country ending of the British Indian Ocean Territory, adopted by startups and developer tools. It costs more per year than .com.
- .ai is Anguilla’s country ending and has become shorthand for artificial intelligence. Renewal prices are among the highest of any common ending.
- .tech and .blog are open to anyone and say the topic outright.
If you write for one country, such as Indian phone launches or UK broadband deals, a .in or .co.uk ending tells readers and search engines who the site is for.
Aim for 6 to 14 characters before the dot. Tech names are full of sounds that can be spelled two ways, such as byte and bite, or kode and code. Read the domain aloud to someone and ask them to type it. If they get it wrong once, others will too.
Keyword domains such as homelabjournal.com rank quickly for one topic and suit a narrow blog. Brandable names such as bitlume.com take longer to explain but survive a change of focus, which happens often in tech: a blog about smartwatches in one year may cover AI tools two years later. Avoid product and company names entirely, because a domain built on someone else’s trademark can be taken away through a dispute.
Tech blogs grow on X, YouTube, LinkedIn and GitHub. Check that the handle is free on the two you will use most before you register the domain.

Running a Tech Blog on Its New Domain
Check whether the name is registered with ICANN Lookup or the domain name generator. Buy from an ICANN-accredited registrar, switch on auto-renew and registrar lock, and note the renewal price. On .io and .ai the second-year bill can be a surprise.
For hosting, a static site generator on a free or cheap host handles a lot of traffic for a text-heavy blog. WordPress on managed hosting is the easier choice if you want plugins for ads and newsletters. Either way, install an SSL certificate before launch. On .dev and .app the site will not load at all without one.
Set up email on the domain, such as tips@ or press@, before you contact PR teams for review units. A free webmail address gets ignored.
Search the trademark register for the name, including close spellings. Online publishing sits in class 41, and if you plan to sell software or courses later, check class 9 as well. The USPTO search covers the US; the UK and India run their own.
Once the blog earns money from ads or sponsors, register a business name that matches. US bloggers file a DBA or form an LLC, UK sole traders can trade under the name, and Indian LLPs or companies reserve it on the MCA portal. Browse the business name ideas hub or use the business name generator if you want a separate company name.
Claim the handle on X, YouTube, LinkedIn and GitHub using the exact domain label. If the blog may turn into a product company, our startup domain ideas cover names that work for both. For a broader list, see the blog domain name ideas.
Tech Blog Domains Tied to a Passing Trend
- Product or company names in the domain. Phone and software makers file disputes against domains that use their marks, and you can lose the site’s address.
- Hyphens and numbers. They get lost when someone reads your URL on a podcast or a YouTube video.
- Deliberate misspellings such as kode or teknik. Readers type the normal spelling and land on someone else’s site.
- Trend words with a short life. Domains built on last year’s buzzword age badly.
- Expired domains with a spam record. Look at old snapshots in a web archive and search the domain in Google before buying at auction.
- Low first-year prices on .io or .ai. Check what years two and three cost before you build a brand on them.
- Letters that collide when joined, such as bitstech. Read the domain without spaces for hidden words.
