Durban is getting a new cabin. On October 30, 2026, Emirates announced that it will put its Airbus A350 on the Dubai to Durban route, bringing Premium Economy to the city for the first time. The daily EK775 and EK776 flights to King Shaka International Airport switch to the A350 from March 1, 2027. With the change, all three of Emirates’ South African gateways will offer the cabin.

For travelers in KwaZulu-Natal, it adds a middle option between Economy and Business on a long flight to Dubai. For Emirates, it is the latest step in a Premium Economy rollout that now reaches every South African city it serves.

Durban Route Changes Coming in March 2027

  • Emirates’ A350 will fly the daily Dubai to Durban service from March 1, 2027, on flights EK775 and EK776.
  • Durban joins Johannesburg and Cape Town, which got Premium Economy in September 2025, so all three South African gateways will have the cabin.
  • Premium Economy on the A350 uses a 2-4-2 layout with leather seats, extra legroom and 13.3-inch screens.
  • Premium Economy passengers get dedicated check-in, priority boarding and a 35kg checked bag allowance plus 10kg of cabin baggage.
  • Emirates had 19 A350-900s serving 21 destinations by March 31, 2026.

What Changes on the Dubai to Durban Flight

The route itself stays the same: one daily flight each way between Dubai and Durban. What changes is the aircraft and the cabins on board. From March 1, 2027, the A350 will operate the service with three classes: Business, Premium Economy and Economy.

Emirates says all three of its South African gateways “are now served with the award-winning Premium Economy cabin.” In practice, Durban flyers will need to wait for the March 2027 switch before they can book the seat on their route.

Premium Economy passengers flying from Durban get:

  • Seats: Leather seats in a 2-4-2 layout, with extra legroom over Economy and a 13.3-inch personal screen.
  • Airport service: A dedicated check-in counter and priority boarding.
  • Baggage: 35kg of checked baggage and 10kg of cabin baggage.

On the same aircraft, Business Class uses a 1-2-1 layout, which gives every Business seat direct aisle access.

The A350 is the third aircraft type in Emirates’ all wide-body fleet, after the A380 and the Boeing 777. It is built for flights of up to 15 hours from Dubai. Durban sits well inside that range.

The fleet is growing quickly. Emirates had 13 A350-900s in November 2025. By March 31, 2026, it had 19, serving 21 destinations. Recent Emirates A350 routes include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and Orlando, its first scheduled A350 service to the United States.

How Premium Economy Spread Across Emirates’ Network

The cabin has spread quickly over the past year. In January 2026 the airline was adding the cabin to more cities, including Barcelona, Mexico City, Rome, Cochin, Karachi, Taipei, Phuket, Brisbane, Addis Ababa and Cape Town, with Premium Economy due on more than 84 Emirates routes by July 1, 2026.

Emirates says Premium Economy has kept healthy load factors on its Johannesburg and Cape Town flights in both directions. It has not published route figures for Durban. Afzal Parambil, Emirates’ regional manager for Southern Africa, said “South Africa remains an anchor of our African network.”

Why Durban Travelers and Businesses Should Care

Leisure and family travelers: Durban’s traffic includes many people visiting friends and relatives. Through Dubai, the route connects to India, Thailand, Indonesia, France and the UK, among others. A Premium Economy seat makes a long two-flight trip less tiring without the cost of Business.

Business travelers: Some companies cap travel spending at Economy, even on long flights. Premium Economy can be an easier sell to a finance team than Business Class. Firms that send staff to the Gulf, Asia or Europe from KwaZulu-Natal now get that option from their home airport, rather than routing through Johannesburg.

Planning connections: Long journeys through Dubai cross several time zones. Our flight time calculator and time zone converter help with working out arrival times before you book.

Indian travelers: Durban has strong family links with India, and the route connects through Dubai to Indian cities. Indian passport holders planning onward trips can check our list of countries Indians can visit visa-free; South Africa itself has its own visa rules to check.

Other Emirates News This Week

The Durban announcement came during a busy week for the airline. At the Routes World conference in Frankfurt, Emirates President Tim Clark named Denver, Detroit and Philadelphia as possible new nonstop US destinations from Dubai. Emirates has not set a launch date or aircraft for any of them. It currently serves 12 US airports and last added a US city, Miami, in June 2021. For US travelers, our guide to US airports with sleeping pods covers rest options on long connections.

Airspace across the Middle East also remains disrupted. By October 30, several foreign airlines had extended suspensions of Dubai flights. KLM has paused Dubai until March 27, 2027, and Lufthansa until November 25. Emirates has partly resumed its Bahrain service with one daily flight, while its Kuwait flights remain suspended. Travelers should check their booking status before flying.

What the Durban Upgrade Says About Emirates’ Plans

Putting the A350 on Durban is a vote of confidence in a route that sits in the shadow of Johannesburg and Cape Town. The A350 is smaller than the A380, and Emirates is using it to bring its newer cabins to cities beyond the biggest hubs.

The four-month gap before the switch is also telling. Emirates announced the change well ahead of March 2027, which gives corporate travel managers and travel agents time to sell the new cabin. With some European carriers still avoiding Dubai, Emirates has a chance to win connecting passengers from South Africa who might once have flown through Europe. How well Durban fills its Premium Economy seats will show whether that bet pays off.
