Sustainable Packaging Suppliers for Small Business: 10 Picks

A small online shop can ship in home-compostable mailers from 50 units, or in custom boxes made from 100% recycled cardboard from just 100. For most US sellers, EcoEnclose is the strongest all-round sustainable packaging supplier, with recycled boxes and mailers made in Colorado. noissue is the pick for branded extras like tissue, stickers and tape. Arka suits brands that want a handful of printed boxes fast, and Vistaprint is the easy entry point for certified home-compostable poly mailers.

We checked each supplier’s own product and help pages in October 2026 and kept the minimums, prices and certifications they publish. The guide is written for small US e-commerce brands, with notes for sellers in Europe, Canada and Australia. Read the materials and cost sections before you order, because the greenest-sounding mailer is not always the right one for your product or your customers’ bins.

Recycled Paper First, Compostables Only With a Home Certificate

  • Recycled paper and cardboard are the safest choice for most small shops. They go in the curbside paper bin, and EcoEnclose boxes carry 100% recycled content with 95% post-consumer waste.
  • Compostable mailers only help if the customer can compost them. Look for a named home-compost certificate, such as the TÜV Austria OK compost HOME mark on Vistaprint’s mailers.
  • Minimums are lower than most owners expect. Arka starts at a single sample, Packhelp at 30 mailer boxes, Vistaprint at 50 mailers and EcoEnclose at 100 branded boxes.
  • Printing setup can cost more than the boxes on a small run. EcoEnclose charges about $95 to $800 for a one-time print plate, which adds $0.95 a box on a 100-box order.
  • Plain stock packaging is the cheapest way to start. Uline’s recyclable kraft padded mailers work out at $0.34 to $0.40 each in 12 by 9 inches, depending on how many cases you buy.

What Makes Packaging Sustainable for a Small Business

“Sustainable” on a packaging site can mean four quite different things. It helps to know which one you are paying for.

  • Recycled content: the box or mailer is made from paper or plastic that has already been used. Post-consumer waste (PCW) means it came from household or business bins, not factory offcuts. Higher PCW is better.
  • Recyclable: the item can go back into a recycling stream after use. Plain kraft paper and corrugated cardboard are the easiest wins here, because nearly every curbside program takes them.
  • Compostable: the material breaks down into soil under set conditions. Home-compostable items break down in a backyard pile. Industrially compostable items need a commercial facility, which many customers do not have.
  • Responsibly sourced: the paper comes from managed forests or recycled sources, shown by an FSC label. FSC is about where the fiber came from, not what happens to the box after use.

The best choice usually stacks two of these. A 100% recycled corrugated box is both made from waste and easy to recycle again. A compostable mailer made partly from plants avoids fossil plastic, but it only closes the loop if the customer has somewhere to compost it.

The 10 Best Sustainable Packaging Suppliers for Small Business

The order below reflects how well each supplier fits a typical small brand: low minimums, clear eco claims backed by a certificate or a material spec, and published pricing or a working online quote tool.

1. EcoEnclose: Best Overall for Recycled Boxes and Mailers

EcoEnclose custom shipping boxes page showing recycled kraft mailer and shipping box options

EcoEnclose is the supplier we would point most US shops to first. Its custom shipping boxes use 100% recycled content, 95% of it post-consumer, and carry the FSC Recycled label. The boxes are made in the USA by a company based in Louisville, Colorado, ship flat, and contain no synthetic polymers, so they go in the recycling bin with other cardboard.

The minimums are friendly. Unbranded boxes in a custom size start at a single unit, which is handy if your product is an odd shape. Branded boxes start at 100. Printing is flexographic with HydroSoy ink or a water-based Black Algae Ink. You also pay a one-time plate cost per design: about $95 for a single panel, about $200 for mid coverage and $300 to $800 for full coverage. Orders above 2,500 units move to a quote.

Beyond boxes, the range runs to poly, paper, padded and rigid mailers, seaweed-based poly bags, glassine bags, tissue and packing tape. EcoEnclose also sells through the Pietra sourcing platform, where its recycled paper apparel mailer lists 100% recycled content (97% post-consumer), a 500-unit minimum for printed versions and $0.57 per unit at 500 for the 7 by 9 inch size. That mailer is a good swap for a plastic poly bag when you ship soft goods.

2. Noissue: Best for Branded Tissue, Stickers and Tape

noissue homepage showing custom compostable tissue paper and branded packaging for small businesses
Screenshot: noissue.co

noissue made its name with custom-printed tissue paper for small brands, and it remains the easiest way to make an unboxing feel personal without plastic. According to the company’s product explainer, its custom tissue is made from recycled material, is home compostable and comes in 17gsm or 28gsm weights. Stickers use acid-free paper and soy-based ink. Roll labels and water-activated tape use FSC-certified paper, and the tape holds parcels up to 20 kg (44 lb).

Its stock compostable mailers are a blend of corn starch (30%), PLA (15%) and PBAT (55%). noissue says they break down in about 90 days in commercial composting or 180 days at home. Roll labels come in rolls of 1,000, and you can buy a single roll. The newer custom mailer boxes are FSC certified, use E-flute 32 ECT kraft board with 30% recycled fiber, and are printed digitally with soy-based ink inside, outside or both.

The case for noissue is the branded layer. Pair its tissue and stickers with a plain recycled box from another supplier and you get a premium look for less than a fully printed box.

3. Arka: Best for Tiny Runs of Printed Boxes

Arka custom mailer boxes product page with quantity options and print choices
Screenshot: arka.com

Arka is built for brands that need printed boxes in small numbers. Its custom mailer boxes start at one sample, which is refunded when you place the full order, and then step up from 10 to 25, 50, 100 and onward to 10,000. Full-color digital printing inside, outside or on both sides comes at no extra cost, and white ink on kraft is available.

The paper is FSC Chain of Custody certified, and Arka describes the 32 ECT board as able to hold 30 to 40 pounds of product. Boxes are made in the USA. Standard production takes 7 to 10 business days after you approve the proof, with up to 5 extra days on orders of 1,000 or more, and shipping takes another 2 to 7 business days. Free design help returns a proof within 48 hours, and carbon-neutral packaging and fulfillment are offered as an option.

Arka makes the most sense for a launch, a limited edition or a test of a new box size. On larger repeat orders, compare its quote against EcoEnclose, where the plate cost spreads thinner as volume grows.

4. Packhelp: Best Low-Minimum Option Made in Europe

Packhelp mailer boxes page showing custom printed eco mailer boxes in kraft and white

Packhelp lets you design a printed mailer box in a browser and order from 30 pieces. Its mailer box range uses three-layer corrugated cardboard in E-flute or B-flute, in kraft, white, or white outside with kraft inside. Printing is full-color CMYK on the outside and inside, with foil stamping and varnish on some models. The site shows an FSC badge and an “Eco choice” label on qualifying products.

All boxes are supplied from within Europe, which makes Packhelp a natural fit for EU and UK brands. It also runs a US storefront, and its US help pages advertise free US shipping and faster delivery for American customers. Poly mailers have a 100-piece minimum. Some models, such as the custom mailer box, can be ordered from a single piece, which helps when you want to see the real thing before a bigger order.

5. Vistaprint: Easiest Home-Compostable Poly Mailers

Vistaprint compostable poly mailers product page with custom printed mailer examples
Screenshot: vistaprint.com

If you want a printed poly-style mailer without fossil plastic, Vistaprint’s compostable poly mailers are the simplest route. The 2-mil film is certified TÜV Austria OK compost HOME to the French NF T51-800 standard, which means it is designed to break down in a home compost pile. That is the certificate to ask for if your customers are likely to compost at home.

The minimum is 50 mailers, and you can print in full color on both sides, including the flap. Sizes run from 9 by 6 inches up to 19 by 13.5 inches, with gusseted versions for bulkier items. Back-side printing costs extra, and Vistaprint does not offer samples, so order a small first run before you commit to a big one.

6. EcoPackables: Best for a Wide Range of Certified Materials

EcoPackables, headquartered in the San Diego area, offers one of the broadest material menus in this list. According to its own site, it holds FSC, GRS (Global Recycled Standard), TÜV and ASTM compostable certifications and is a certified B Corporation. The range covers compostable and recycled poly mailers, recycled kraft mailers, honeycomb paper padded mailers, compostable and recycled poly bags, paper garment bags, retail bags, pouches, boxes and tubes.

It also sells its own materials. BioLaminate is a sugarcane-based polyethylene that recycles as No. 4 plastic, R100P is 100% post-consumer recycled film, and Renewa uses ocean-bound plastic resin. The company runs manufacturing across North America, Europe and Asia, offers U.S.-made options, and can add QR codes that explain disposal to your customers. It quotes minimums and lead times by project, so ask for both in writing.

7. Better Packaging Co: Best for Ocean-Bound Plastic Mailers

Better Packaging Co North America custom mailers page showing recycled and compostable mailer options

Better Packaging Co builds its range around waste. Its POLLAST!C mailers are made from 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic, and its custom mailer collection also includes compostable mailers, compostable bubble mailers, bamboo boxes and envelopes, and boxes and envelopes made from sugarcane waste. The company displays B Corp certification.

A separate “Low MOQ” version of the printed POLLAST!C mailer exists for small brands, and an online MOQ calculator shows the minimum for your size. The North American store prices in US and Canadian dollars. Choose POLLAST!C when you need a waterproof, tough mailer, and choose the compostable line only if your buyers can compost.

8. Uline: Best Budget Stock Mailers With Fast Shipping

Uline is not an eco brand, but its kraft recyclable padded mailers are a practical swap for bubble mailers. They use double-wall 40 lb kraft paper with light padding, and Uline tells customers to put them in the recycling bin with other paper. You buy by the case, there is no printing, and orders placed by 6 p.m. ship the same day from 15 locations across the US, Canada and Mexico.

9. Pietra: Best for Comparing Several Suppliers at Once

Pietra is a sourcing platform rather than a factory. You post a packaging project and suppliers respond, with the platform citing more than 1,300 suppliers and factory replies within 48 hours. Messages and invoices sit in one place, and members can book time with production and fulfillment specialists. Sign-up is free.

Its value for a small brand is speed of comparison. EcoEnclose lists products there, including the recycled paper apparel mailer, with $6 samples that arrive in about seven days. Treat Pietra as a shortcut to quotes, and still check each supplier’s certificates before you pay.

10. Paperlust: Best for Australian Brands Buying Printed Kraft Boxes

Paperlust prints custom kraft mailer boxes from Oakleigh South in Victoria and ships them flat across Australia. The board is unbleached B-flute kraft, uncoated so it can go in kerbside recycling, and the self-locking design needs no plastic tape. Printing is one or two spot colors by flexography, on the outside only, with a turnaround of about two to three weeks after proof approval.

The minimum is 500 boxes, and Paperlust publishes every price tier, which makes it a useful lesson in volume pricing even if you sell elsewhere. A small box costs AUD 8.79 each at 500 but AUD 4.94 at 5,000, including GST. Delivery adds AUD 10 or AUD 15 per order.

Choosing Eco Packaging Materials for Your Products

Start with what you ship, not with the material that sounds greenest. A box that crushes or a mailer that tears creates a replacement order, and that second shipment wipes out the eco gain.

Paper and cardboard are the default for good reason. They are made from widely recycled fiber, and customers know which bin they go in. Compostable plastics have a real place, but only when the label is clear and the buyer has a compost pile or a collection service. Recycled plastic mailers are often the honest answer for heavy or wet-weather shipping. They keep a durable material in use instead of pretending it will vanish.

Reuse beats all of them when your customers order often. A sturdy box with a return label, or a mailer with a second adhesive strip, can do two or three trips. If you sell on Amazon or your own store, add the packaging cost per order to your margin math with our Amazon seller profit calculator before you upgrade.

Reading FSC and Compostable Labels Before You Buy

Packaging claims are easy to make and hard to check. These are the labels worth asking for, and what each one actually tells you.

  • FSC Recycled: the fiber comes from recycled sources. EcoEnclose lists its certificate code (SCS-COC-009926) on its box pages, which is the kind of detail a real claim includes.
  • FSC Chain of Custody: each company that handled the paper is certified, so the FSC claim survives from the forest to your box. Arka uses this wording for its board.
  • TÜV Austria OK compost HOME: the product is certified to break down in a home compost heap. Vistaprint quotes the NF T51-800 test standard alongside it.
  • ASTM or industrial compost certificates: the material breaks down in a commercial facility. Useful for cafés or events with compost collection, less useful for parcels sent to homes.
  • GRS (Global Recycled Standard): a third-party check on recycled content, mostly seen on recycled plastics. EcoPackables holds it.
  • B Corp: a certification of the whole company’s social and environmental practices, not a specific product. Better Packaging Co and EcoPackables show it.

A vague phrase such as “eco-friendly material” with no certificate, percentage or standard is a warning sign. Ask the supplier for the certificate number and the exact recycled-content percentage, then put the same facts on your website. Clear disposal instructions on the pack (“compost at home”, “recycle with paper”) do more good than a green leaf icon.

What Sustainable Packaging Costs: A 500-Order Worked Example

Take a small clothing brand shipping 500 orders over a few months, each in a 7 by 9 inch to 12 by 9 inch mailer. The published prices compare like this.

OptionOrderCostCost per order
Uline recyclable padded mailer #2, unprinted5 cases of 100 at $37 a case$185$0.37
EcoEnclose recycled paper apparel mailer, printed500 at $0.57$285$0.57
Difference$100$0.20

Twenty cents an order is the price of a printed, 100% recycled mailer over a plain recyclable one. On a $40 order that is half a percent of revenue, which most brands can absorb. Our percentage calculator makes this check quick for your own prices.

Printed boxes behave differently because of setup costs. EcoEnclose’s $95 single-panel plate adds $0.95 a box on a 100-box order but only $0.095 a box across 1,000. A full-coverage plate at $300 to $800 adds $0.30 to $0.80 a box even at 1,000 units. That is why a simple one-color logo on kraft is often the smartest first design.

Volume discounts are steep, but they tie up cash. At Paperlust, 1,000 small printed boxes cost AUD 6.59 each against AUD 8.79 at 500, a 25% saving per box. Yet the bigger order needs AUD 2,195 more up front, and boxes sitting in a spare room are cash you cannot spend on stock or ads. Run the order size against your sales pace with our {a(BZ+”break-even-calculator/”,”break-even calculator”)}, and buy the larger run only when you expect to use it within six to twelve months.

How to Order Custom Eco Packaging Without Wasting Money

  1. Measure your product in its inner wrap. Add a small allowance on each side and pick the smallest standard size that fits. Smaller packs cost less to buy and to ship.
  2. Order samples or a tiny first run. Arka refunds its one-box sample on a full order, EcoEnclose sells samples for a small fee, and Vistaprint’s minimum is only 50.
  3. Test the pack in the real world. Ship a few to friends in different states, include a heavy item and check for crushed corners or split seams.
  4. Keep the first design simple. One color on kraft avoids large plate fees and still looks deliberate. Add tissue and a sticker from noissue for the branded moment.
  5. Ask for the certificate and the lead time in writing. Production times on custom work range from about a week at Arka to two to three weeks at Paperlust, plus shipping.
  6. Tell customers how to dispose of it. Print “recycle with paper” or “home compost” on the pack or the insert card, and repeat it on your product pages.

Sustainable Packaging FAQ for Small Shops

What Is the Cheapest Eco-Friendly Packaging for a Small Business?

Plain stock paper mailers are usually the cheapest. Uline’s recyclable kraft padded mailers cost $0.24 to $0.80 each depending on size and quantity, as of October 2026. Printed recycled mailers start around $0.57 each at 500 from EcoEnclose.

Are Compostable Mailers Better Than Recycled Ones?

Only if your customers can compost them. A home-compostable mailer with a TÜV OK compost HOME certificate suits buyers with a garden compost pile. For everyone else, a recycled paper mailer that goes in the curbside bin is the more reliable choice.

What Is the Minimum Order for Custom Eco Mailer Boxes?

It varies widely. Arka starts at one sample and then 10 boxes, Packhelp at 30, EcoEnclose at 100 branded boxes and Paperlust at 500. Lower minimums usually mean a higher price per box.

What Does FSC Certified Packaging Mean?

It means the paper fiber comes from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources, tracked by the Forest Stewardship Council. It says nothing about whether the box is compostable, so check end-of-life claims separately.

Can I Put Eco Packaging Through Home Recycling?

Plain kraft paper and corrugated cardboard are the safest bet for curbside recycling. Uline, for example, tells buyers to recycle its kraft padded mailers with other paper. Compostable mailers belong in a compost heap instead, so print the right instruction on your pack.
