Buyers Hear the Name on a Demo Call Before They Read It
A software company’s name gets heard far more often than founders expect. It is said aloud on demo calls and in podcasts, then typed into a browser by someone who only heard it once. If a buyer has to ask how it is spelt, you lose a few of them right there. Coined names ending in -ly or -ify were easy to get as domains a decade ago, and now there are so many that they blur together on a vendor shortlist.
Work out which name the customer will actually see. A SaaS product needs a name that works as an app icon, a browser tab, a login screen and a line on a card statement, where you may get around twenty characters. A development agency is selling a team, so a name that sounds like a firm suits it better. Many founders keep one company name for the legal entity and give each product its own brand, which leaves room to launch a second product later without renaming the business.
Stay away from names tied to one framework or language. Whatever is fashionable this year can date quickly, and several framework names are trademarks their owners defend. Words like cloud, AI, data, tech and soft are overused across the trade and add little to a name.
Local or global ambition matters too. An IT services firm serving companies around Pune or Manchester can carry a regional name, while a product meant for customers in several countries should avoid words that sound odd in Spanish, Hindi or German.
Test the shortlist before anyone writes a line of code under it:
- Say the name on a call and ask the other person to type it into a search bar.
- Write it as a lowercase code repository handle and package name to check it still reads.
- Put it on a pricing page mock-up next to the word Enterprise and see if it looks credible.
- Search app stores and package registries for products that already use it.

Clearing a Software Name for Contracts and App Stores
Check the domain first, since a software company lives on its website and email. Search the exact name in the domain name generator, and look at IT company domain name ideas if the .com has gone. Many SaaS firms use .io or .app for the product, but buy the .com too if you can, because buyers often type it out of habit.
Run a trademark search before any code, docs or app listing carries the name. Software sits in Nice Class 9 for downloadable software and Class 42 for SaaS and software development services, so search both on USPTO and IP India, and on the EUIPO register if you plan to sell in Europe. These classes are crowded, and similar-sounding coined names are refused often.
Register the company next. US founders often form a corporation or LLC in Delaware or their home state, and the US LLP registration guide covers the partnership route. Indian founders need MCA name approval for a private limited company or LLP, and names that resemble an existing company or a registered trademark get rejected. In the UK, Companies House will not accept a name that matches one already on the register.
Then claim matching handles on LinkedIn and other social platforms, a code repository organisation name, and the package names you plan to publish. Reserve the app name in each app store developer account as soon as you have one, since those names go to whoever claims them first. Add a Google Business Profile if clients visit your office, and use the invoice generator for early client work so the legal name appears correctly on every bill. For more options before you commit, run seed words through the business name generator.
Software Names That Fail a Security Review or Trademark Search
- Names that copy the shape of a big platform’s brand, such as a prefix stuck onto a well-known product name. Platform owners send takedown notices to app stores, and the listing can vanish overnight.
- Framework or programming language names inside the company name. Many are trademarks with usage policies.
- Words like secure, shield or safe on a product that has never been through an independent audit. Buyers’ security teams notice and ask harder questions.
- Vowel-dropped spellings that nobody can reproduce after a demo call.
- A name that collides with an open-source project. Developers will find the project first, and the project may hold a trademark of its own.
- Numbers and hyphens, which get lost in speech and mangled in email addresses.
- Words that mean something rude or odd in a language spoken by a customer base you plan to sell to.
