Skincare Brand Business Names: 200 Ideas Sized for a Tube Label

Two hundred skincare brand name ideas, plus the packaging, labelling and trademark checks to run before the first batch is filled.

Forty Serums on One Shelf and Only One Name Gets Picked Up

A skincare buyer usually meets your name at arm’s length, printed in small type on a dropper bottle or the crimped end of a tube, squeezed between other brands on a pharmacy shelf or in a grid of marketplace thumbnails. The name has to survive that size. A small serum bottle gives you a label panel roughly the width of a thumb, and the brand name shares it with the product name, the hero ingredient, the net quantity and often a batch code. Long names get shrunk by the designer until nobody can read them.

Shoppers in this category look for a hint of how the product will feel on the skin and whether it suits them. Soft, short sounds tend to work, and so do plant or ingredient references, as long as they are only part of the name. The words every new brand reaches for are glow, pure, derma, skin, bare, clean, naturals and essentials. A name built only from those will sit beside a dozen near-identical listings on any marketplace, and it will be very hard to protect as a trademark.

Decide early how far the brand is meant to travel. A name rooted in haldi, ubtan or other kitchen remedies can be a real asset in India and with the diaspora abroad. A brand aiming at UK or US retailers needs a name that a buyer in Leeds or Ohio can pronounce straight off the shelf, and that a beauty editor can spell in a caption without checking.

Run your shortlist through these checks before you brief a packaging designer:

  • Print each name at the size of a real dropper bottle label and read it from a metre away.
  • Say it aloud to a friend and ask them to type it into a marketplace search bar.
  • Look at it inside a round profile picture, where it shrinks to the size of a fingernail.
  • Search the name with the words skincare and cosmetics to see who already sells something close.

Before the Cartons Go to Print

Start with the web address. Search the exact name on its own and with skin or skincare added, using the domain name generator to see variations, and look through beauty domain name ideas if the plain .com is gone. Buy the domain before you send the name to a packaging designer or a contract manufacturer.

Then run a trademark search. Skincare and cosmetics sit in Nice Class 3, which covers non-medicated cosmetics, soaps and perfumery. A product that claims to treat acne or eczema can fall under Class 5 for medicated preparations, and that also changes how regulators look at it. Selling your own range online can be covered under Class 35. Search USPTO, IP India and the UK IPO for identical and similar-sounding marks in those classes, including spellings that swap a letter or two.

Register the business next. In India, a private limited company or LLP needs MCA name approval through the incorporation forms, and our guide on registering an LLP in India walks through the steps. In the US, form an LLC with your state or file a DBA if you trade under a different name. In the UK, Companies House refuses names that match an existing company and restricts certain sensitive words.

Labelling rules affect how big the name can be on the pack. Cosmetic labels generally need the product identity, net quantity, a full ingredient list in INCI names, and the name and address of the manufacturer or responsible person. In India the cosmetics rules also ask for a batch number, manufacturing date and use-before date. In Great Britain, products need a UK Responsible Person and a notification before they go on sale. Leave room on the artwork for all of this before you decide on the logo size.

After that, claim matching social handles, set up a Google Business Profile if you sell from a studio or shop, and print a code from the QR code generator on the carton linking to full ingredient details. Use the invoice generator for your first wholesale orders so the registered name appears on every bill. If you want more options before committing, put a few ingredient words into the business name generator.

Names a Labelling Inspector or Trademark Examiner Would Question

  • Medical words such as derma, clinic, Rx, MD, cure or heal. They suggest a drug claim, which can pull a product into stricter rules and draw complaints from regulators and marketplaces.
  • A bare ingredient as the whole name, such as Niacinamide Co or Retinol Lab. Examiners treat these as descriptive, so you end up with a mark you cannot stop competitors from using.
  • Organic, natural or chemical-free in the name when the formula cannot back it up. Organic in particular is tied to certification in several markets.
  • Names that echo a big beauty house or a cult serum label by one or two letters. Class 3 is crowded, and large cosmetics owners watch new filings closely.
  • Long names that force the designer to shrink the type below what can be read on a small bottle or a sachet.
  • Words that turn awkward in another language you plan to sell in, which matters once the brand is listed on export marketplaces.
  • A founder’s first name alone, such as Priya Skin, which is likely to clash with existing filings and gives the brand little to protect.
